Cable broadband is one of the several technologies used to deliver internet to Australian homes and businesses. Though the outcome is the same as with ADSL2+ and the NBN, Cable Broadband is actually an entirely different technology and incompatible with the other broadband service.
Cable is delivered over Hybrid Fibre Coaxial cable and doesn't use the copper telephone lines that we use for ADSL2+. HFC cable is the same cable used by Foxtel to connect home to its subscription TV service, and if you have cable Fxotel you are eligible to get cable broadband.
However, there isn't a lot of HFC cable laid across the various neighbours in Australia. Telstra and Optus both invested in rolling out cable, but neither got very far.
Telstra and Optus are the only suppliers of cable broadband, too. To find out whether you live in a cable area you need to visit either of these supplier websites and put your address into the search field. This will identify which broadband option is available to you.
Cable quick facts:
- Cable speeds vary up to a maximum of 100Mbps
- Cable requires an HFC connection which needs to be installed be a technician
- Few homes are connected to the cable network, and most of these are in capital cities
