Time Warner Cable Opens Its 20th TWC Learning Lab in NYC at the Chinese-American Planning Council in Flushing

- Time Warner Cable (TWC) and Chinese-American Planning Council, Inc. (CPC), today held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open a state-of-the-art technology and computer center at CPC’s center located at 133-14 41st Ave in Flushing, Queens. The TWC Learning Lab, funded by a $52, 000 grant from Time Warner Cable, will be integrated into CPC’s educational programs that target Flushing’s diverse community. In addition to the grant, complimentary high-speed Business Internet and TV services will be provided by Time Warner Cable Business Class.

“Time Warner Cable is proud to partner with such a strong organization like CPC to help bridge the digital divide for Flushing residents and provide them with access to e-learning programs, ” said Wajeeha Aziz, Time Warner Cable’s Area Vice President of Technical Operations for Brooklyn and Queens. “Through our TWC Learning Lab here in Flushing and 19 other locations in the city, we are providing state-of-the-art technologies to help New Yorkers succeed in today’s rapidly changing world.”

Janice Won, Interim President and CEO of the Chinese-American Planning Council, Inc., said, “We are proud and honored that CPC will be the first community-based organization to receive two Time Warner Cable Learning Labs. There are overwhelming needs in immigrant communities for access to state-of-the-art technology and secure and reliable Internet connection and the TWC Learning Lab in our new Queens Community Center will be a great resource for the Flushing community. CPC’s TWC Learning Lab in our Manhattan Community Center benefits 3, 000 clients a year and many more will now be served in Queens.”

The TWC Learning Lab at CPC is fully equipped with computers, laptops, tablets, computer software and high-definition televisions. The technology and equipment will enable CPC to provide new and enhanced courses in college readiness and vocational training, English as a Second Language, resume writing and interviewing for jobs, among other educational programs. The lab will also be available for people to conduct online employment searches and increase their overall access to computers and high-speed Internet.

TWC committed in 2011 to open 40 TWC Learning Labs in New York City by 2020 — providing low income communities with access to computers and high-speed Internet. TWC’s total investment to equip these 40 labs is anticipated to exceed $2 million, plus additional in-kind funding from Time Warner Cable Business Class for complimentary Business Internet and TV services. Non-profit partners, such as CPC, oversee a lab’s daily operations and utilize their technologies to improve the lives of people they serve.

With today’s opening, TWC has now opened 20 labs in neighborhoods throughout New York City. In Queens, labs are already open at the Variety Boys and Girls Club of Queens, Woodside on the Move, Sunnyside Community Services, Rockaway Development & Revitalization Corporation, Greater Ridgewood Youth Council, and Korean Community Services, Inc.

In Manhattan, labs are located at Easter Seals New York in Lower Manhattan, the LGBT Center on 13th Street, CPC’s location in Chinatown, YWCA on W. 56th Street, and in Harlem at the Police Athletic League Center, James Weldon Johnson Community Center, Ali Forney Center and at Penn South Social Services. In Brooklyn, labs are located at the Red Hook Initiative, Good Shepard Services in Park Slope, Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation and HeartShare Human Services in Bay Ridge. Staten Island is presently home to a lab at the Gerard Carter Community Center in Stapleton.
